These are turbulent times in Occupy encampments around the country. City officials closed down camps in at least six cities over the weekend and early Monday, after three people died in encampments late last week. Salt Lake City police ordered the closing of the camp in Pioneer Park after a man was found dead in his tent in what the police said was possibly a drug overdose combined with carbon monoxide poisoning. Last week, a protester in Burlington, Vt., shot himself in an apparent suicide, and in Oakland, a 25-year-old protester was shot and killed on the outskirts of the encampment in Frank Ogawa Plaza. Evictions in Portland, Denver, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, Burlington and Oakland were largely peaceful, but more than 60 people were arrested nationwide. It was the second eviction in Oakland, after a violent confrontation on Oct. 25. While this eviction was far more peaceful, the chief legal adviser to Mayor Jean Quan, Dan Siegel, resigned in protest early Monday morning. [CBS, The New York Times, Dan Siegel]
